2022 Operation Smile Charity Challenge- L’Etape du Tour
This year’s challenge to raise money for Operation Smile we’re going international and taking on the infamous L’Etape du Tour in the French Alps.
The day will see us take on the same route as stage 12 of the 2022 Tour de France, between Briançon and Alpe d’Huez. We’ll be covering 170 km with more than 4,700 meters of accumulated positive elevation gain, including the famous climbs of the Cols du Galibier and de la Croix de Fer and ultimately the slopes of Alpe d’Huex. For details on the route see here.
Once again, we’re hoping to go one better than last year and try to break the £3000 mark. If you’re interested in donating, you can find our just giving page here.
For those of you not familiar with Operation Smile UK they have since 1982 provided hundreds of thousands of safe surgeries for those born with cleft lip and cleft palates where it’s needed most, third world countries with undeveloped medical sectors. As a not-for-profit volunteer based organisation we’re trying to do our bit to help raise a small amount of money to help fund surgeries and support for those unfortunate kids born with this condition.
In the third world the syndrome can often be life threatening. Operation Smile aims at empowering local health professionals through training and education creating surgical solutions that last. They do this by partnering with ministries of health, academic institutions, corporations, local health professionals and other organisations.
Their goal is to change lives and revolutionise how entire health systems deliver surgical care where they work. For all too many children born with a cleft lip or cleft palate in the developing world, the harsh reality of social isolation and physical pain is a part of their daily lives. If these children do not receive timely surgery, the effects can be enormous, with many unable to eat or speak properly, and unable to attend school or play an active role in their community due to the stigma associated to their conditions.
Any support you can provide would be greatly appreciated and thanks for taking the time to read this article.
Thanks,
